Three Des Moines Area Non-Profits Recognized with Donations from Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines
June 21, 2017
The Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines (FHLB Des Moines) presented three Des Moines area non-profit organizations – Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity, Joppa and YMCA Supportive Housing Campus – with checks totaling more than $26,000 during a special presentation today. The donations were a celebration of FHLB Des Moines ongoing commitment to the community, as well as the recent purchase of the 909 Locust Street building in downtown Des Moines. The building will serve as the new FHLB Des Moines headquarters.
All Des Moines-based employees were given $109.09 – corresponding to the 909 Locust address – and the opportunity to choose one of the three non-profits to contribute their funds. Representatives from Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity, Joppa and the YMCA received their checks during Wednesday’s festivities at FHLB Des Moines current headquarters at 801 Walnut.
“Building strong communities is an important part of our mission”,” said FHLB Des Moines President and CEO Mike Wilson. “We look for ways to put our mission into action and give our employees a chance to see how we impact communities each and every day through the work that we do. Today’s celebration demonstrates our ongoing commitment to the Des Moines community – the purchase of our new building and support of three outstanding local organizations who also help build stronger communities through their affordable housing initiatives.”
The event also caps a two-week Habitat Blitz Build in the Des Moines Birdland neighborhood. FHLB Des Moines contributed $80,000 as the sole sponsor of one home, with more than 130 FHLB Des Moines employees volunteering for the cause. In partnership with Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity alone, the Bank has donated over $300,000 and hundreds of volunteer hours since 2005 for housing projects in the area.
In addition, FHLB Des Moines contributes 10 percent of its net income each year to the development of affordable housing through its Affordable Housing Program (AHP). Since 1990, FHLB Des Moines has awarded more than $500 million in housing grants to assist nearly 100,000 families, including over $56 million in the state Iowa to help almost 15,000 families find a place to call home.
